Marrying in Macedonia and the Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage (CNI)
In order to apply to the Macedonian authorities for permission to marry in Macedonia, the British party must be able to produce a Certificate of No Impediment to Marry (CNI). This may be obtained from the British Embassy in Skopje.
To apply, you must have been resident in Macedonia for 3 weeks at the time of lodging the application. You will need to complete a Notice of Marriage and swear an affidavit. We will need to see the following documentation:
• British Passport
• Divorce papers (if applicable)
After the affidavit is sworn, the Notice of Marriage is displayed in the Consular Section waiting room for 21 days. Providing there are no objections to the marriage, a Certificate of No Impediment will be issued in Macedonian. Alternatively, if you already have a CNI, which has been issued by a UK authority, we can certify this as a true document. The local authorities may also require you to have this document translated from English to Macedonian and notarised by a court certified translator. The Embassy cannot do this for you.
Once permission to marry has been received from the Macedonian authorities and the marriage has taken place, if the place of future residence is to be the UK, the Macedonian party must apply for a settlement visa. This must be applied for through the British Embassy, Visa Section.
