Westminster Fund for Democracy

Address by the Macedonian Parliament Speaker Trajko Veljanovski

Course Prospectuses for the Macedonian Parliament staff and Members of the Parliament were presented at a public event in the Macedonian Assembly on 23 September 2009. Speakers included the Parliament Speaker Mr. Trajko Veljanovski, Ambassador Andrew Key and the Chair of Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) Ms. Linda Duffield.

This training programme was created by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy in cooperation with the Macedonian Parliament including reputable international and local implementing partners. The programme is divided in three modules, thematically focused on improving the efficiency, accountability and transparency of the work of the Assembly.

International implementing partner organisations include: House of Commons, National Audit Office, University of Essex, International Bar Association, and Thompson Reuters Foundation. Local partners comprised organisations such as the Centre for Economic Analysis, Macedonian Young Lawyers Association, Political Science Department of the Macedonian Faculty of Law, and School for Journalism and public relations.

At the presentation Ambassador Key stressed the importance of the role the Parliament in fulfilling the shared values of the European Union based on the core democratic principles. He also stated that an effective Parliament will have an important role for Macedonia at present, it will be as important in the future throughout the negotiation process, and also once Macedonia joins the European Union.
