Embassy History

Following the Republic of Macedonia's gaining of independence, the British Government opened its Embassy in Skopje on 16th December 1993. By a decree of Queen Elizabeth II, Mr. Tony Millson was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.

Ambassadors that followed: Mr. Mark Dickinson as the second, Mr. George Edgar as the third and Mr. Robert Chatterton Dickson as the fourth Ambassador to Macedonia.

The present Ambassador, Mr. Andrew Key took up his appointment as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of Macedonia in August 2007. He presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Macedonia on 5 September 2008.

Over the years, the Embassy gradually increased the number of services offered to the public. In 2001 the visa section commenced operation, offering visa services to the Macedonian citizens. In January 2006 the Embassy moved to new premises designed by British architects and built by UK and local engineering companies.

The new British Embassy premises were officially opened by His Royal Highness Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, on 18 May 2006. Prince Edward unveiled a plaque to mark the opening that is now on display at the Embassy building.
