Building the Civil Society
A vibrant civil society able to participate in policy-making and complement government services is the core of a democratic society. By focusing on democracy building and human rights, the UK supports promotion of strong national human rights mechanisms, the ability of the criminal justice system to operate according to international human rights standards and structures that ensure equality of women, ethnic and national minorities and disabled people before the law. In democracy building the UK’s objectives are to improve the electoral process, promote and protect civil society role to influence, monitor and hold to account state institutions and strengthen the media to improve compliance with international standards.
