Specific Activities - Democratic Institutions

  • Code of Conduct and Public Awareness Campaign for Free and Fair Parliamentary Elections June 2008
    The project supported the implementation of democratic parliamentary elections by provision of public awareness and community outreach programme. It included a high-profile signing ceremony of the Code of Conduct, nation-wide media campaign and a field-based campaign to reinforce the message of the necessity to hold free and fair elections.

  • Domestic Monitoring of the Early Parliamentary Elections 2008
    Active participation of the citizens as observers of the elections process is a key element in ensuring impartiality of the monitoring of the process. MOST conducted a comprehensive domestic monitoring of the Early Parliamentary elections 2008. The PVT- Parallel Vote Tabulation program was conducted in all six electoral districts. On a total of 900 polling stations throughout the country 900 PVT observers were deployed.

  • Strengthening Parliamentary Commissions, permanent staff and political parties in the Macedonian Parliament
    This three-year programme aims to enhance the capacity of parliamentary commissions, political parties and permanent parliamentary staff to fulfil their roles in ensuring that the key functions of the Parliament (legislation, oversight and representation) are effectively implemented. Project targets:
    - Enhanced capacity of the Cabinet of the President of the Assembly;  
    - Strengthened cohesiveness of political parties in government and opposition, working through parliamentary co-ordinators to develop links and exchange between political parties in the UK and Macedonia;
    - Strengthened role and impact of the Parliamentary Committees: Legislative Committee, Committee on European Issues, Finances and Budget Committee, Committee on Transport, Communications and Environment, Committee on Political System and inter-ethnic relations and the Committee on Rules of Procedures and Mandatory-Immunity Issues.

  • Capacity building of the Anti Money Laundering Directorate
    The project aims to reduce the harm to the UK from Money Laundering of criminal proceeds through Macedonia by increasing the capacity of the Money Laundering Directorate within the Ministry of Finance to analyse the information flow and produce intelligence analyses using the I2 intelligence databases. This will enable the Macedonian Money Laundering Directorate to interface with other law enforcement agencies internationally.

  • Support to the Organised Crime Department of the Macedonian Ministry of the Interior
    The projects aims to introduce a crime and intelligence information gathering system to the eight regional police command areas as well as the Organised Crime Unit at the Ministry of Interior through the establishment of new intelligence data base, which will analyse information and turn it into useable intelligence. The project provides the Macedonian Police service with an updated Criminal Intelligence system, enabling them to effectively allocate resources to combat organised crime, human, drugs and firearms trafficking. It also assists Macedonia meet its future obligations to its European and International partners in its fight against cross border crime and terrorism.
